En essayant de saisir l'ambiance de l'univers de ma bande dessinée, j'ai réalisé pas mal d'illustrations dont je me servirai sans doute comme couvertures ou pour illustrer certains des chapitres de mon histoire. L'une d'entre elles que je trouve assez intéressante est celle que j'ai créée après avoir été enthousiasmé par une oeuvre de Carlos Schwabe (1866-1926), un peintre né en Allemagne dont le travail était à la jonction entre le Symbolisme et l'Art Nouveau.
While trying to catch the mood of the universe I am creating, I did quite a lot of illustrations that will arguably be used for covers or inner illustrations of my future graphic novel. Among them, an interesting one according to me is the one below, done just after I was enthralled by a painting of German born Carlos Schwabe (1866-1926) whose work was at the junction of Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
Cette peinture de Schwabe a été utilisée pour illustrer une section des Fleurs du Mal de Baudelaire ('Spleen et idéal'). Et ce n'est guère surprenant: c'est l'horreur qui étreint la beauté.
Schwabe's painting was used to illustrate Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil. You wonder why: here is beauty intertwined with monstuosity.
Je me suis donc inspiré de cette oeuvre de Schwabe et j'ai imaginé l'héroïne de mon histoire en pleine lutte avec un serpent de mer décapité (en fait, elle a d'ores et déjà abandonné la lutte si on regarde bien), réminiscence de la sirène de cauchemar qu'avait imaginée Schwabe. J'avoue qu'on peut déceler une influence d'Hokusai dans la manière dont j'ai dessiné les vagues.
Je peindrai sans doute ce dessin plus tard.
I was inspired by Schwabe's work and therefore I imagined the main female character of my story struggling with a headless sea snake (actually, a closer inspection will reveal she gave up already), reminiscent of Schwabe's twisted siren. I confess a bit of Hokusai's touch can be recognized in the way I drew the waves.
I shall paint that drawing later on.
